Oxidative Stress and Skin Cancer: An Overview Oxidative Stress and Skin Cancer: An Overview

The theme of this article is, at first, right for the journal it is published in because it deals with biochemical processes. However, its applications would be more useful in clinical fields, so it would have been better to publish it in a medical related journal.

The title is not correct at all because it does not include references to the antioxidants (as phytochemicals). In addition, the abstract is too long in relation to the whole article and does not mention the objective of the review, which is to talk about producing or favourable mechanisms of ROS related to skin cancer, as well as introducing those compounds that have been demonstrated to prevent their appearance.

The introduction is succinct and contributes information about skin cancer, but it does not show some data which link the production of ROS to skin cancer (relative risk, odds ratio…). It also reveals the epidemiological importance of skin cancer as well as, as mentioned in the text, the “associated risk factors for skin cancer”1. Nevertheless, those risk factors are not with a quote to another article which shows information about association measurements and others related to them.

Moreover, the sections “Epidemiology”1 and “Etiology”1, especially the first one, could lead to error because they do not specify that about they are referred (skin cancer or ROS), even more as the first one begins like that: “epidemiological studies have reported that the incidence of it is significantly rising worldwide due to increased cumulative ultraviolet exposure”1.

Methods are not described. The authors do not propose an experimental question which motivates the carrying out of the article. Neither inclusion and exclusion criteria to choose the articles nor where they have been found are presented. The results of the search for articles and the bias likely arisen when selecting the articles (selection one, carrying out one…) are not shown either. Therefore, this is a non-systematic review in which the search and the selection of the articles have been made at their convenience, hindering the evaluation of the quality of evidence and the control of the bias.

Finally, the conclusions are well definite, so that, as we cannot protect ourselves the whole time from ROS production in our skin by the direct action of the sun, we could use “plant’s ability to protect themselves from UV radiation from the sun”1. Moreover, the authors urge scientists to keep on researching on the action of their components. However, the kind of article does not allow to establish conclusions in a quantitative point of view, but in a qualitative one at the most.
